How to apply for U.S. citizenship

   Confirm that naturalization is the right process

   Review USCIS eligibility requirements before filing. A person's immigration history can affect eligibility, so use USCIS guidance or qualified legal help for case-specific questions.

   Prepare and submit Form N-400

   Follow the current Form N-400 instructions, collect the required evidence, review the application, submit it to USCIS, and keep a copy. Fees and filing options can change—check USCIS before paying.

   Follow USCIS notices

   USCIS sends a receipt notice and may schedule biometrics. Keep your address current and follow each notice for the date, location, and documents to bring.

   Prepare for the naturalization interview

   At the interview, an officer reviews the application and asks questions. Unless an exemption or waiver applies, the process also includes English speaking, reading, writing, and a civics test.

   Attend the interview and tests

   Bring the documents listed on the USCIS appointment notice. The officer will provide the results and may request additional information before making a decision.

   Take the Oath of Allegiance

   After approval, USCIS schedules an oath ceremony. Naturalization is complete only after taking the Oath of Allegiance and receiving the Certificate of Naturalization.
